How to compress an image to 200 KB

Add your photograph and keep the target at 200 KB. Before pressing Compress images, read the receiving form for an accepted file format, any minimum file size and required pixel dimensions. Why 200 KB?

An image compressor to 200 KB is useful when an upload field allows more detail than a small thumbnail but rejects an original camera file. This allowance is a byte budget, not a passport-photo specification. It does not determine the shape of the photograph, the background colour or how much of the frame a face should occupy. Keep those requirements beside you while preparing the file.

There are real forms with this boundary. IIT Ropar's admissions instructions list a JPG photograph between 10 KB and 200 KB. That example has both a lower and an upper limit; it is not permission to submit any image smaller than 200 KB. Consult the current instructions for your own application. What happens to quality

For a portrait, inspect the eyes, hairline and edges of glasses after processing. For a screenshot, check the smallest text at normal viewing size. These details can fail in different ways: a face may look smeared while thin letters become difficult to distinguish. A file can pass the size check and still be unsuitable for the person who needs to read or recognise it.

If your source is large, try the full 200 KB allowance before choosing a tighter target. With JPEG or WebP the encoder searches quality settings; if the budget remains unreachable it can reduce both dimensions. If you must retain exact pixels, enter those dimensions first. An error at fixed dimensions means you should reconsider the format or source, rather than upload a file that does not meet the limit.

Make the most of your 200 KB

For a form that says JPG, select JPEG explicitly. HEIC is accepted as an input but is not an output format here. A transparent PNG exported as JPEG receives a white background. Keeping PNG can be appropriate for artwork, but its lossless encoding means a strict budget may require a smaller resolution. Check the resulting format as well as its extension.

For a genuine 10–200 KB requirement, enter 10 in the minimum KB setting and keep 200 as the target. Leave the minimum at zero when your form specifies only a maximum. A plain or very small source may remain below a required minimum even at high quality. The tool does not insert filler bytes to inflate it; return to a suitable original or verify the requirement.

Prepare the framing before compression if the image contains a large blank border or unrelated background. The default mode preserves proportions apart from pixel rounding; it does not recognise a face or automatically remove unwanted margins. Exact width and height settings can involve cropping, so inspect the preview for missing edges. Do not substitute an AI-generated portrait for an application photograph.

Keep your original until the destination has accepted the download. Select the new file from your downloads folder, not the old camera copy. If it is rejected, compare the measured bytes, dimensions and format with the portal's message. Does 200 KB mean 200,000 or 204,800 bytes?

This tool uses 200,000 bytes. Some software reports binary units, where 200 KiB equals 204,800 bytes. Use the destination's stated byte limit when available; the decimal cap here is smaller.

What width and height should a 200 KB photo have?

There is no fixed pixel size for a byte limit. Image detail, format and quality all affect the encoded size. Use the pixel requirements supplied by the receiving form, then verify the compressed output.

Can I make a photo between 10 KB and 200 KB?

Set minimum KB to 10 and target KB to 200. Also select the required format. The tool checks the range, but an unsuitable source can fail to reach the minimum; it does not pad the file.

Is this an image compressor to 200 KB or a resizer?
